Today I pray for believers that are burdened by debt. In today’s world, particularly in America, many people find themselves acquiring credit cards and loans in hopes of securing a better life. Yet, after graduations occur and student loans require repayment, or after the car needs more work than the payment amount, we find ourselves discouraged and frustrated. Many know that one of the best strategies for getting out of debt is to learn and practice delayed gratification. Still, the microwave culture that we live in makes it quite difficult to resist buying for now so that we can save for later. Whether your debt has been acquired through carelessness, school loans, a mortgage, vehicle, and/or even the desire for making a better life for you and your family, it is for you that I pray.
Today I pray for believers burdened by debt. Father, Your word says that the borrower is slave to lender (Proverbs 22:7) and that you came that we may be free (John 8:36). So Father, I pray that this year will be the year of radical changes in my brothers’ and sisters’ lives. I pray that You will grant us, as the body of Christ, divine wisdom for eliminating debt and for wealth building. True wealth is found in the the freedom to live as You have called us to live, not conformed to this world. I pray that You begin this year of transformation in our hearts first and then in our minds. Help us to understand and know that we are not what we have or even what we do. Instead, our identity and worth are found only in You. Therefore, I pray that you strengthen our relationships with you.
We confess and repent of the grounds of peace and freedom we have surrenders as we have acquired this debt. Your word says the thief comes to steal. We pray that you return to us Your peace, hope and joy even as we take the first steps to paying off our debt. In a culture that promotes credit and debt, we pray that you help us not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by renewing our minds. We also pray for America and the debt that we as a country owe. We pray that You put leaders in place that will submit to You and Your path for finances and resources. May people be held accountable but may they also experience the same grace and love that we need even now. Break the bondage of debt from our homes, our communities, our cities, our states, and our country as we return to doing things in the way that You called us to.
Help us to practice restraint when shopping and to only buy what we have the resources (cash) to purchase. Help us to remember that You have granted us the ability to make wealth, particularly when we are serving You in our purpose. If we need lifestyle changes to get free from the burden of debt, I pray that You grant us the wisdom, grace, and resources to do so. You came that we may have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). Abundance is found in freedom and serving the kingdom. May this be the year that we circle the city of our debt by walking in obedience to You so that the walls of our debt may come crumbling down. Speak to our hearts Father and help rid us of this burden that we have acquired. Thank You for GRACE – unmerited favor. It is Your grace and Your mercy that we need to get free. We submit to You and agree to follow You this day. In Jesus Name, Amen.
